To do when choosing your songs is to consider your group. Are you travelling with close friends or your pre-school age children? It's important that everyone in the vehicle feels they have a tune they can relate to on the track list. This way, even if they don't know every song, they still feel like they are part of the experience.

Don't be afraid to ask your fellow road-trippers what a few of their favorite songs or favorite musicians are. This way, you will be equipped with some basic knowledge of whose tastes overlap and if there are some risqué songs that one person loves that might not be so perfect for another person.
You should also check the music library software on your computer because some of these programs feature auto-play-list functions. This can be a huge time saver, but it can also serve as a good building block. Take a look at the list and edit and add songs that you feel fit your crew's needs.
Remember, this should be fun, so don't get too stressed over the details. Maybe make two or three mix tapes that you can change as the mood of the day changes. During night driving, you could make a list of slow tunes and ballads, and reserve the rock songs for the afternoon. You'll know it was worth it when you have the whole vehicle singing in tune to "Celebrate."
